What we ate in Maui, Hawaii

We recently returned from a trip to Hawaii and some readers were wondering if we can compile a list of good eats in Maui, so let’s get started!

Coconut’s Fish Cafe – 9.5/10

Here we ate the coconut shrimp, their popular fish tacos and a mahi mahi grilled fish plate. All were delicious but I particularly enjoyed their mahi mahi plate. We also liked how it was counter service then easy self-service for drinks and seating. Great for families who didn’t have a lot of time to spare.

That’s a Wrap Cafe – 8/10

We ordered takeout acai bowl and a breakfast wrap. Great for a nice quick breakfast at the beach.

Oao by Sushi – 10/10

We liked this food truck so much, we had it twice during our trip. I particularly loved their spicy poke bowl. We also tried their original poke bowl and miso marinated butterfish which were both excellent.

Monkeypod – 7.5/10

Very busy, nice chain style restaurant. We had to wait a bit even with a reservation so little ones can get impatient here. Overall the food was ok. I tried their famous mai tai which was good and their saimin was a really nice comforting noodle soup dish. Aaron had their burger which was standard.

Aunty’s Sandy’s Banana Bread – 8/10

We had to stop by to pick up their banana bread, a smoothie and their rice and pork special during our mini Road to Hana roadtrip. There wasn’t a lot of seating so we drove a few minutes to have a picnic in the car by the big waves at Keanae Peninsula. Their chez mix was also surprisingly excellent and very addictive!

Kitoki – 8/10

As recommended by a friend. This hip elevated food truck had many options and live music. We tried their grilled shrimp and gazpacho, chicken with curry sauce, and braised beef loco moco. My favourite dish of the night was the loco moco which was a fresh take compared to the usual beef patty version.

Mala Ocean Tavern – 7.5/10

We stopped by here after our whale watching cruise. We were easily able to get a table at lunch. We had their fish and chips and fish burger which were both good but I would’ve preferred less use of spice (?turmeric) in their fish and chips.

Happy Belly Food Truck – 9.5/10

We had to come back to this food truck park beside Kitoki since we didn’t ge to fully explore it. We picked this food truck with delicious looking items and it did not disappoint. We were partial to the crispy pork fried rice, but their chicken katsu and panang curry was also delicious and unique.

Kalia Cafe – 8.5/10

This cute coffee shop is close to where we stayed so Aaron basically came here everyday for his morning coffee. For Aaron being the coffee snob that he is, this says a lot. One morning, we also picked up their popular sugar beach croissant, house burrito, and I tried their cold brew. They were all excellent choices especially as a quick takeout option to enjoy at the beach.

Sawasdee Thai – 8/10

It was our last night in Maui and I got tired to going out so Aaron came back to this food truck park to pick up some Thai takeout. We tried their coconut shrimp, Thai tacos, pad Thai. They were all enjoyable. The pad Thai was very mild though so if you need more of a kick this is not for you. It’s toddler friendly though! Their Thai tacos was what originally through Aaron to order from here. The roti was very nice but it did get too soggy with all the sauces. Maybe it would have been better if we ate it fresh.

Sweet Hula – 8/10

We should just live at this food truck park as we returned again on our last morning here. We had to try the acai bowl here since it was highly rated. To be honest, I’m not a huge sweets fan so the rating can only go so high for me but I appreciated the generous scoop of peanut butter which rounded the flavours of the bowl for rather than just sweetness.

Aloha Prime Eatery – 9.5/10

For our last meal here, we had the hoisin BBQ chicken plate from this food truck that opened just in time for us to enjoy this deliciousness before we had to return our rental car. It was excellent and the portion sizes were generous – enough to feed our family of 3 along with the acai bowl above.

And there you have it. This was all we ate during our 5 days in Maui! Did we miss out on anything that you would recommend? Let us know in the comments below!
